I've just returned from a holiday in the South of France. I have very little French (and less Catalan or Spanish) but managed to get along by just pointing at whatever I wanted, smiling and saying "silver plate" and "murky bucket". So you could always try that.
I did find it helpful to be carrying a small child so everybody was distracted from my poor language skills and just wanted to fuss the baby although that might not be appropriate in your situation.
