We actually tried getting various variants of this in Sheffield. Because of the high number of one-way streets in Sheffield, cyclists do tend to be penalised disproportionately. It's a very big issue here. So pretty pleased there is a trial.

Without dirtying my browser, I take it that 'road tax' has already been raised in the Comments section.

It's all very well putting up a few signs and letting cyclists go through 'No Entry' signs, but that IMO is just creating a culture of cyclists to be rat runners, just like the cars we despise.

It is a cheap effort by the government to provide a small solution to a big scale problem: the total lack of decent cycling infrastructure in this country.

What bloody good are a few 'Except Cyclists' signs and turning a blind eye to riding up one way streets?

Go on youtube and see how the Dutch do it. It costs money, but it reduces casualties, saves lives, reduces pollution and eases (if not cures) town centre congestion.

I think it would need to be everywhere so that motorists would be expecting it. I use some cycle contraflow's in Bristol and you have to check that a motorist even looks your direction when they join the road - 75% of the time they just look the direction they are expecting traffic from. However I do find the ones I use useful in terms of more direct routes.

They don't make it clear in the article, will one way streets have a marked line for the cyclists? Or just expect them to face down cars?

Not sure I like the sound of that...and it will give car users another excuse to resent cyclists.

Cycling infrastructure on the cheap, well in cash terms, but possibly not in the human cost of injury and death. This can work if money is spent on doing it proparly, giving the results that the Daily Fascist actually point out in their article. Putting some 'except cycles' signs up will not suffice.

While not opposed to cycle contraflows in principle, in general I'd prefer to see one-way systems reverted to two-way flow for all traffic. One-way streets have higher traffic speeds, leading to higher pedestrian casualty rates and are usually harder to cross, and are also very difficult to serve with buses.

Hardly new, we already have cycle lanes going against the traffic on some one way streets in Brum city centre, works quite well on the one I use regularly [from New Street through the Chinese quarter down to the Pershore Rd]. One of the cycle lanes even emerges from a footpath and goes diagonally across the junction at a set of lights. Bit confusing that one mind.

Also have cycle only traffic lights so we can cross when all the car lights are simultaneously on red.
