Things happen, you make plans, you book your travel, then "events, dear boy, events"

Your Advance ticket cost 80 quid. You can't get a refund. But you can change the date and time for the same journey. Do so, purchasing a normal, refundable ticket for, say, 100 punds. Now you are 180 notes down, how does that help?

You will be refunded 70 (80 less 10 admin fee - daylight robbery for an online transaction) but now you've shelled out 100. Wait 24 hours. Apply for refund. You will be refunded 90 (100 - less the mugging).

You are now only 20 pounds out of pocket rather than down the 80 you were for your useless ticket.

(At least that's how it works if you have booked via Scotrail - which I use for its ease of bike reservation)

I think you know the simple solution, so I won't point it out.
