I really like the 928. Probably because it is the unloved but perfect car. It doesn't have the engine at the rear, like all Porsches should have, nor is it air cooled. But it does have the gearbox at the back to improve weight balance, and inboard discs (I think). And a lovely water-cooled V8. OK, it is a GT, so has an automatic box, but I can forgive that.

It should have been the future for Porsche, but sadly became an evolutionary dead end.

There were 5 speed manual 928 Porkers apparently. I don't think they are cheap these days though

A fairly new car but I think it counts as a classic as they've been making them in various guises for 50+ years. A new or nearly new one wouldn't be out of kilter cost wise with something like the TR3 or Mk2 Jag I was semi seriously considering

Got chatting to the delightful old gent who owned it. Like me I think he'd always wanted one from his younger days when it had Ford Anglia side valve engines and such like (it was Ford Kent engines by the time I first learned of them in the 80s). His one had a 600cc Suzuki (car) engine with a turbocharger giving 170hp per ton. The Ford 2litre version is more like 400hp per ton and the bonkers supercharged version a lot more again

Anyway a lovely modern classic

I have spotted another green earlier Polo in and around the same village but didn't spot it today.

I think the XJS is one of those rare examples of a car where the styling tweaks and facelifts it got over years actually made it better.

I can recall being with my auld feller in his XJS V12 in the late 70s when he was stopped by the dibble...who asked if they could look at the engine. Pater was happy to oblige.
