Michelotti's original had the headlights behind the grille and didn't have that unfortunate chrome sided roll bar.

I've always assumed the changes were to meet the US safety standards of the time so they could keep up export sales.

Indeed, I just think the rollbar could have better designed to look less like an afterthought.

It could, but back then everything in British car design looked like an afterthought - usually because it was.

This is true. Often interesting and radical concepts, but poorly executed (my father's first new car was an Austin Maxi).
