My first car was a Polo breadvan. You are right - no servo on the brakes. Makes driving other cars more interesting!

Sold it to my sister, and was then written off by a journalist from Practical Caravaning.

My mum had the “coupé” version which I recall was very reliable but not especially dynamic.

I used to enjoy hanging on for dear life on the 270 deg curve, going from the M69 to the M6, knowing that I needed to leave the curve at 60 mile/h to ensure I could join the M6 at a sensible speed.

The captain of our uni (Imperial College) fencing team had one of those - this was early 2000's.

I remember four of us, plus four large bags of fencing kit cramming into it for a fixture at Kent Uni in Canterbury. That was something of an experience!

They won't have it for long parked in the rain. The mk4 rusted for fun to give owners something to keep their mind occupied while awaiting the AA.
Low milage 50 odd thousand ,I'd take the risk.
Anyway it's all about looks for me....I'm shallow like that 😁

Rather appealing Scimitar; this one a soft top rather than the more common estate car version. Never driven or had a ride in one, but Ford mechanicals in a lightweight plastic body doesn't seem a bad plan. I think Princess Anne no less had a couple

Nearer 140 bhp on a good one. The Essex V6 was a bit of a lumbering old thing.

Looking up wikipedia, it weight around a tonne, so 140hp per tonne is far from shabby.

My first quick car was a 150HP turbo petrol golf GTi which I think was a tonne and a half and
my 2.3 turbo Saab was somewhat more powerful still but weight over 1700kg and still went pretty well.

I suspect that when on boost the Golf was a torque monster compared to the Essex six banger.

To be fair I've never driven a V6 ford, whether Essex or Cologne flavours but I'd guess a large(ish) capacity old fashioned engine would have more low down torque than a revy small turbo
