One thing I've noticed, being the sad ex copper I am, is how old the tyres are on some of these classic cars. At both recent car shows I spied date codes well back in the 00's, and a couple in the nineties. I binned "new" Pirellis onnthe C70, 8mm tread and still with the moulding hairs, because they were a decade old. These old boots san and do kill people, so it is an eye opener as to how many people run them.

The Mk 2 was my first car, a 1300L 1975. I had it for two years before selling it to my neighbour and bought a 1976 1300Ghia.

Incidentally, on a trip to London (A12) it was running rather hot, not boiling exactly but the gauge was pretty high. It was the best fuel consumption I ever got out of that car, 45 mpg, normally about 40. I had to have a new rad as it was blocked and then only about a year old.

While not excusing it, i have fallen victim to the old 'yep, tread looks fine' when dragging stuff out to use.
Camper trailer years ago, it got pulled out 3 times a year at the most, loaded and off ypu went after a cursory check of tread and pressures.
Felt a rumbling on the motorway somewhere, over, looked in mirror to see a cloud of smoke. Pulled over, tyre had given out completely and comprehensively.
I replaced it at the side of the road....and got the other done at the first opportunity.
We (i) never evn knew or thought about tyre degradation...looks ok, it is ok kind of mentality.

A mate of mine owns a vehicle hire company and he told me he is having to replace tyres that are just a few years old because of the sidewalls cracking - some tyre makers are adding a quantity of 'recycled material' to new tyres to meet 'corporate sustainability goals' so tyres that have plenty of tread are being binned in some cases - the words foot, gun, trigger come to mind

Seen but not photographed over the last few days: a red MGB, parked with the tonneau on; an immaculate dark blue big Healey; and a MkIII Cortina, looking as nondescript as it did when new.
