One for the mechanics -long-term damage of leaky head gasket?

If it`s not left for too long then it should be fine with a new gasket

Creamy oil on dipstick? If yes it has caused more wear to the engine bearing surfaces than would be ideal. That is not to say once fixed and the oil flushed and changed properly that the engine does not have life left in it.

From experience I would say that after a head gasket failure the engine is seldom as reliable as before.

What caused the gasket to go? What type of car.

That creamy stuff can also be caused by lots of short journeys (with no head gasket damage), as condensation mixes with the oil and causes the same result

I noticed oil dripping off the bottom of the casing a couple of weeks ago, and some creaminess around the outside of the head (the oil on the dipstick looked fine). The dealer took it in last week and claims that the engine was put together with no head gasket. They've put it right, and it seems to be ok, but I have niggles.[/QUOTE]

If the oil on the dipstick looks fine then that is a good sign.

Less than a year old. Could you ask for a replacement? I can see why you are worried.
How did it get off the production line without a gasket!

Ah, I see. If you didn't cook (ie, overheat) it you should suffer no lingering problems.

Indeed, I once took it to a local garage to get something done and they checked the oil and told me the head gasket had gone. Didn't believe me when I said it didn't have one, or a timing belt/chain for that matter.

You might want to question that one with the dealer. I'd be pretty amazed if an engine without a head gasket would even run let alone keep going for a year. You would need some pretty close tolerances to get a pressure tight seal between 2 plain metal surfaces.
