Got away from work late.
pouring rain.
Rain jacket not in pannier.
Snapped rear gear cable.

Good thing emerged from all this.I discovered a new bodge .bike upside down.slackened screw that holds the cable guide on the underside of the bottom bracket.pushed derailleur onto second biggest cog on cassete pulled in slack and tightened screw onto cable.

Needed that cog for hills on way home shifted front end between small and middle ring for a bit more speed on flat bits.

In the past I have jammed a cable under a bottle cage screw but its easy to damage the paint doing that.

Time for new cables all round I think.

I get it now; good bodge. But if not enough cable to reach a suitable clamping point, you can get a lower gear (but not a lot lower) by screwing the high gear (+) limit screw on the derailleur in as far as it will go.

Reading this reminds me why single speeds make so much sense for commuting.

I'm seriously leaning towards one, even in hilly Yorkshire.
