One sore foot

I recently upgraded my aldi (spd) shoes to some made by Mavic - the new ones cost about £100 (and I swapped the pedals for shimano touring pedals) but after about 40 hours use, one of them is still causing trouble - with the top my right foot getting sore / cramped where the biggest velcro strap is tightened (the one furthest away from your toes). If I loosen it the problem goes away pretty quickly (within minutes) but then the shoe is decidedly looser and not as efficient when peddalling.
The shoes were sold to me as 'good for wide feet' - which I have. I dont really want 'proper' road shoes as I walk a fair bit in them also.
Any help appreciated

Try thicker socks?

Also a set of Specialized BG footbeds will give you are more snug fitting in your shoe, which might allow a looser setting. They are pricey but worth the money. I got some cheap from Eblag.
