I got rid of the Chopper and Grifter for a Coventry Eagle racer.

I outgrew the Grifter and my first race bike was a second hand Dawes. :becool:

I had a blue one, second (or probably third or fourth hand). I went all over on it. Gear shifter went and was replaced by a thumb shifter, presumably because spares were in short supply by then (early 80s). Chainstay rusted through and was welded by a bloke at the local garage for a couple of quid.

Then I fell off it on a family bike ride, going downhill. Faceplant, chipped front teeth and a bit of road rash. I didn't realise it at the time but that pretty much killed cycling for me from then until 2019!

The Grifter was a more practical bike

Nah! The Chopper has a rack built-in so I used to put my mum's shopping in a carrier bag back there; the carrying handles of the bag fitted on the vertical poles behind the saddle. It also had a kick-stand (tbf, i think the Grifter did as well?).

I had a red Chopper and my friend had a light-blue Grifter. My other friend had some unknown-to-me bike and the three of us would ride around the 'hood. Good memories.
