I walked into an abbatoir, 1985, to do an electrical job, I walked out 3 or 4 hours later and have not eaten meat since, nor have I wanted to.
By 'electrical job' do you mean you were the one firing the stun-gun?

Wouldn't do for everybody to become vegetarian; millions of animals would be destroyed and billions more would never be born. Complete species would we wiped of the face of the earth, as their only use and hence, the only reason for breeding them and keeping them alive is for food.
Utter bollocks.

We're experimenting with making our own rice milk at the mo. I wouldn't recommend it for diabetes though due the carb count. Probably better than the stuff on the supermarket shelves. I'm not vegiterean or vegan, just do things like that sometimes ^_^.
I have to say I was surprised at a) how easy it was to make & b) how much nicer it was than the shop bought 'nut' milks. I will happily do it again. I have yet to try making my own rice milk, but I reckon cashew nut milk should be very good as well. I have the soya beans ready to try some homemade soya milk when we get back from out holiday as well. I did this http://nouveauraw.com/raw-recipies/desserts/deep-dark-chocolate-blackberry-cheesecake/ recently as a birthday cake for myself which was excellent. You would never have known it was made from cashew nuts - but costs wise, it is definitely "a treat" - once a year job nothing more. It is on the menu again though because my brother-in-law is looking at opening a raw food café and we want him to feature it. We know it will be a hit.
The raw food diet my b-i-l is on works well for him. It makes him watch his diet. He is type 1 and has been able to reduce his insulin requirements by massive amounts. I can't say I understand it, I'm not diabetic (just seem to have most other things (severe asthmatic, with partial 2ndary Addison's diseases amongst many other issues, allergic to all dairy)) but it works for him. I have incorporated a raw diet into my lifestyle for decades simply because I love raw veg (as well as wild veg/leaves etc) and used to grow a lot of my own veg. It will soon be time for nettle harvesting again, which I love. - do get strange looks though standing around in wellies with marigold gloves on my hands, a pair of scissors and ... don't have our own nettle clump anymore ... shall have to have words with my landlady and see if she minds me exploring her land (12-15 acres) to see what I can find.^_^

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I am not going to get on any high horse about the pros and cons regarding this but i do have a question, how do veggies justify eating eggs and fish ?Surely they are unborn animals and meat albeit from the sea.

I've experianced two types of veggies in my life.
Those that do it because they can not stand the taste of meat (and that includes fish).
Those that do it for idealogical reasons.

My mother can not stand the taste of meat so I am used to seeing veggie meals, although she always prepared meat for the rest of us.
Those that do it for idealogical reasons always seem to be trying to convert me (I presume I've just known the wrong people), so I find making enjoyment noises whilst tucking into meat stops them after a while.

Personally I don't have an opinion. I like the taste of all meat (except fish, foul or venison), but can not digest dairy or most fruit and veg (it's not life threatening, but has unpleasent aftereffects).

I treat it as religion :- my opinion is my own, and everyone else with have their own and is welcome to it as long as they leave me to mine.

and a source of omelettes
we are on holiday at the moment and our friends have hens which have the best eggs we have ever come across - they roam wild on the shores of Loch Rannoch. We get an unlimited supply because they are laying way too many for them to eat, and because we always come 'out of season' she can't get rid of them all. So far we have had 2 dozen since we arrived on Saturday.... There will be more to follow and I know she will fill our car with them on the way home as well... they are so tasty, I can never say no to them. Omelettes are many, as are very soft boiled eggs and 2 very happy cyclists...

Off topic but you lucky sod on being by Loch Rannoch. We travel from Southampton to the campsite on the south road every year (normally May but this year Scotland). Last year I took the MTB and was on the Carrie walks everyday, this year I'm planning on taking the road bike and testing those small inclines.

We stay in a holiday home on the north shore. We have cycled the up & over into Glen Lyon via that route out of Carie walks. See here http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/your-ride-today.8938/post-2369920 - I don't see the point in camping for that cost though in high season it is obviously more. Have noticed that the campsite signs are covered over for the Kilvrecht campsite - didn't think it was seasonal but I could be wrong. Expecting to be snowed in by the end of the weekend. should be good fun to get out with the studded tyres on the mtb... (We used to travel up from Haslemere to here in a day, now we only have to come up from Cheshire - much easier!)

You can sing that Simon and Garfunkle song on the way back - Homeward Eggbound.

^_^ Lighting. I'd rather die than work in an abattoir, it's hell on earth, the noise, the smell and the fear is palpable. Never missed meat, not ever, not once, it might be harder for people who give it up for other reasons, but for me, that day was a seismic shock to my brain. I made the connection between that hellish environment and food on my plate. Yuk!
