Thanks HLaB.

As an aside, I used to use a plan-your-ride site called "Bikeroutetoaster". (It seems to have died something of a death lately). I wonder if the "toaster" part of the name is coincidence?

Sorry to ask the obvious question, but are there any translation issues?
no.
All very simple.

There is a short instruction manual/file in english.

They are great. Recommended.

Do check out the site.
Open Street Maps is of course updated continuously/daily - openfietsmap only about once or twice a year - but not a great issue for most places. In the UK it's already brilliant.

I use OSM. There is a decent guide on DC Rainmakers site which runs through the how to. Allows you to chose where you want maps for from preset selections, or build your own.
