... begins today.

After a long time living away from home in fairly minimalist splendour in Scandinavia I've come back to the UK to discover I have far too much stuff. Wardrobes and chests of drawers have been cleared and Oxfam's rails are heaving. The man drawer is gone, upended, unsorted, into the bin. Cathartic. Cupboards stuffed with old tech emptied and contents gone to the recycling point. Various musical instruments have been given away and my bass gear made redundant "I've retired" and donated to an impoverished student of my former bass teacher.

Now my attention turns to the bike shed...

First to go, free, to a friend, this weekend is my Boardman HT Pro, which I've not ridden properly since doing the Trans-Cambria on it a couple of years ago. I'll keep my full bounce Canyon.

I'll keep my tourer, and my Equilibrium, and one singlespeed/fixed, and my cargo bike, and my Brompton. I may not be able to part with the Purple People Eater as building it was a labour of love. But that looks to be it. The tandem has to go, tlh just won't.

The object is to get the current fleet of 'approximately' thirteen bikes down to those listed.

Anyone tried this....?

I have periodic clear outs. Donated a load of clothes and bedding in the autumn to a collection for the refugees in Calais and finally went through everything electrical and took it for recycling. It's a good feeling. Until you look round six months later and realise you've refilled all that empty space....

Yes, I have identified two bikes as surplus to requirements. Can't quite get any further than that yet.
That's about where I am. Current daft idea is to repair their minor faults and put them on spinlister.

Actually, come to think of it, @GrumpyGregry was the recipient of one of my cast-off bikes ...
Do you want it back?

Which eventually was freecycled via being placed in my front 'garden' with a sign saying "free to a good home" on the top tube. It was less than 15 minutes before the doorbell rang. Unfortunately can't use that method for the time being as the front 'garden' is full of builder's materials for tlh's extension.

Current plan (see tlh's extension) is to end up with a bigger house with less carp in it. ;)

I gave my old commuting bike away, to someone who'd had theirs stolen. Apart from that, are you completely crazy?

We have a one in - one out rule in our house; whatever you buy, you have to sell, give or throw away the equivalent. If you haven't worn or ridden it in the last year, get rid of it.

From time to time @Flying Dodo and I start to have The Conversation but it never goes anywhere. I wonder why?!

Him: 3 road bikes, 1 folder, 1 cargo bike (with tandem capability)
Me: 3 road bikes, 1 folder, 1 city bike

None of the road bikes in our respective sets of 3 are interchangeable: we each have a daily commuter and one "best (ti)" bike. The third of Adam's road bikes is somewhat redundant and rarely used in recent years. The third of my road bikes is a 'Sunday best' machine, gets occasional use.

My city bike is about to lose its role as central London commuter and will probably 'retire' to Bognor Regis.

At least we don't have any spare ("... one day I'll build that up...") frames hanging around any more.

So - in answer to your question - while I applaud your aims, it's a very difficult thing to do when it comes to bikes!

You had to bring up the spare frames....
