I hadn't seen Windows Vista yet, not having a copy either at work or at home (still using XP and 2000). Until yesterday, looking at a colleague's laptop. I've just learnt that you can't run a DOS application full-screen in Vista. This is an issue for me, should I ever have the change forced on me, because I still have several DOS applications which I need to use, and age-related eyesight changes mean that it's a strain for me except in full-screen mode.

Anyone know of a work-around or an add-on?

just keep the machine on xp and, when it comes time to buy a newer machine, keep it on for that purpose.

next machine, get a mac and have a machine where you can use OSX (better than vista), or vista (for when you have to).

I've just asked our local IT manager and been assured that the company (which is a major multinational) has definitely opted not to change over to Vista, in fact they have found significant problems with other aspects of it. Microsoft may well be taking note! So far so good.

Domtyler and Keith Oates: sorry, I know this forum is meant to be a friedly fiendly friendly place with plenty of 'give and take', but your fatuous remarks are not welcome. Eyesight problems are not a joke for me, especially with my astronomy interests.

There's rumors that Microsoft are bringing forward the release of their next OS (Windows 8) to the second half of next year. A few suspect this is due to the response to Vista being so bad.

Apparently Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista is about to be released which may resolve this problem.

It's never advisable to buy into the first release of a new version of Windows.

Bit touchy!

You can configure the command window however you please anyway, there is no need to use full screen as you can maximise in Vista. Just go into the options, select the font tab and change the font to a larger font size the same as you would in XP.

I thought we specialised in fatuous remarks on here. Just ignore them and wait for the sensible answers if you feel hurt!

or, indeed, any operating system! (Leopard anybody?)

Back to the OP, if it wont do full screen, is it not possible to set the default font size for DOS apps to something very large like it was on previous versions?

I cant check this at the moment as I am not in the office, but I could check when I get back.

Just tested this in Vista and it is no different to XP in respect to DOS windows.

You can create shortcuts to programs that open full screen or choose one of the many font sizes that make your windowed app much bigger than normal.
