Poppy is settling in really well and is developing a more outgoing and curious nature. Well, she was outgoing and curious before, but only if I were around; now she's trotting off on her own to investigate things.

She can't go out on a walk until the last week of August but I've been taking her out and about in my arms to visit people (this morning we visited two horses and seven people, including two children) for her socialisation. This afternoon I plan to go down the road to my neighbour who has two very small Jack Russells that are very friendly to see if they can play together (her dogs are fully vaccinated so it should be safe in her garden or ours). I'd like Poppy to have a chance to play with another dog, if they're willing, as Lucy is so enormous compared to her and just seems to be all legs.

My husband comes home tomorrow - hurrah! - and I expect he'll fit the bike basket properly to my trike on Monday and I'll take her for a few short rides (less than a mile) over next week to get her used to it. I may also try the trailer but she's so small that it will rather dwarf her and might be better when she's a trifle bigger.

It's weird, when I woke up this morning I felt really gloomy and desperate for James to go home and appalled at the awful mistake I had made in getting a puppy (who turns out to be an extremely obliging and well-behaved example of puppyhood), and yet now I feel OK about it. Oh, and Poppy had a little tiddle on the carpet today; we'd been out in the garden and she'd done a poop but it was pouring with rain and she came straight back in, so I'm going to have to watch out for that...

Glad that you're feeling more positive today.

Today Poppy is 12 weeks old and we decided to take her to visit the marina and sit on our uncle's boat (our boat is currently out of the water having some repairs done). My husband would like Poppy to be a seadog to accompany him on some of his sailing trips in due course.

Here is Poppy with James

I have never had a dog, and do not realise how quickly they grow. The cats (who have me) grew outwards when they arrived as young "adults", but not upwards very much.

How tall will Poppy be eventually?

We're not sure how big but I imagine pretty small - like a small cocker spaniel.

She's very much into the biting phase at the moment which can be trying, but she's a very intelligent little thing so will hopefully be reasonably easy to train.
