You'll need a plastic bearing preload tool, and some allen keys to undo the non drive arm. The rings are quite deep, so may need the crankset off.

It may be possible to change the ring without removing the cranlset from the frame?

Very difficult on doubles with small chainrings. I have to remove the crankset on SRAM 2x and looking at MrsF's SLX 2x, it's very similar.

just changed the outer ring, doesn't change without removing the crank and the wee ring, bit of a b***ix but the bike now runs like a dream. Have a new chain ordered just to be sure to be sure!

The consideration on when to replace your chain is entirely unrelated to a change of chain ring. Just saying.
