Talking about panniers... my new laptop pannier has arrived from JE James. It only cost a tenner and it was worth the gamble as it's a great bag. Holds my 15" Lenovo G505 easily.

I decided I needed to fit a rack and getting a laptop pannier after starting a MSc degree in Software Engineering at the University of the West of England. I had been carrying the laptop plus food plus spare clothes in a rucksak but even though the trip is only 3.5 miles it was too much of a burden. I next decided to revive an old 10" Samsung netbook by buying a Win 7 licence key recovered from a destroyed machine. The machine worked ok but the screen was too small for working with UML diagrams, so the rack and laptop pannier was next best idea.

Just taken it out for a quick test ride and it worked great.

I keep my Wilko fully water absorbent panniers on most of the time, mainly because I like the sporty streamlined look they give my bike, and they also do a good job catching a lot of crud and water spray on wet days. The only time they are removed is when I occasionally enter the bike in a sprint event at my local velodrome.

I'm also in the 'remove them' camp. Actually - the 'remove it' camp as I tend to only have one attached if I'm around town. My current set are an ancient pair of Karrimor panniers (from back when Karrimor was a good thing) that click on and off easily. I'd be worried about the bag and/or contents disappearing if I left attached to the bike, plus it's easier to stuff the shopping in the pannier in the shop. Also, having to carry it from time to time means I get a weighty reminder to empty it out of all the junk that seems to accumulate in its deep, dark recesses...

I love that shopping video

Found it interesting that everyone pushed forward a little before mounting the bike (a little scoot) - presume this is much easier on the knees than a standing start. I will have to try that.

Looks good, especially for a tenner.

Time to repeat my single pannier tip.

If using only one, mount it on the right hand - drive - side of the bike.

The width there gives you a bit more road presence from the perspective of a driver following behind.

I'm going to be using one of my Altura panniers on the drive side for my change of clothes, food and space for some shopping on the way home.

I got a new bike with panniers today. The panniers are secured using velcro. Would this be a problem as they will be removed daily? Im thinkin the velcro will wear away after a while.

I think you are right. Don't they have also hooks?

As far as I can tell, the only way to secure them is with the velcro straps.
