Happened to a friends wife, I know because she can't be arsed to fix it until she needs to and he's forever whinging about the fact that by the time she gets round to it they'll say it's been too long to rectify. Not that either of them know for sure.

Why would anyone want a paper driving licence? I am actually looking forward to mine expiring in a few years time so I can get one of the new credit card ones which would fit in my wallet instead of the huge and easily damaged monstrosity I have at the moment.

The cheeky mare at the desk at Hertz in Edinburgh had the cheek to laugh at it when I rented a car a few months ago.

BTW, I am not Maureen O' Reilly. That's just a picture I borrowed of the net.

If you have a current passport, then when applying for the Driving licence there is (or was 3 years ago) a box to tick giving permission to use the picture already on record.

I have a thirty-year-old paper one that is very battered and is held together by a whole load of Sellotape. It has my one speeding endorsement written on it in Biro by a kind person at DVLC. The car hire company in Avignon was amused by its distressed state last week, but were quite happy to accept it for all their form filling. I'm sticking with it. I heard an ugly rumour that the plastic jobbies need renewing every few years and that you will be stiffed every time you renew. That's progress.

As has been mentioned up thread, every 10 years and £14 to renew. The first is annoying as it's leading to people forgetting (it's not really a 'stick in your diary' type time scale) and ending up unwittingly illegal (not that being unwitting is any excuse) the second is significantly cheaper than I thought it would be. Cue someone announcing it should be £1000 as it'll teach those dirty cage drivers a lesson.

  1. Because the old one doesn't run out every 10 years? Not having a photo ID driving license is yet to cause me a problem.

Does for my mother in law

Post Office: Do you have a driving license?

MIL: No , I'm 87 and blind.. There isn't any point

Post Office: Do you have a passport?

MIL: Why, I can't afford to go abroad

.., and so it went on, and all she was doing was collecting a parcel

I want not to pay £14 every 10 years........and it won't be £14 in ten years time, will it? It'll be some arbitrarily inflated milking fee.
