Carbohydrate is the best source of energy in sportand exercise but there are many types of carbohydrates, so which type doathletes consume? Of the many various carbohydrate groups, they can be furtherdivided into two groups, low glycemic and high glycemic, but which one is morebeneficial to supply the body with energy for a competition? The purpose ofthis study is to find out which type will have the best effect on performanceand will it make a difference when a carbohydrate drink is consumed during arace?
We are looking for regular cyclists aged between 18and 36 to participate in this study. Participation will involve 3 visits to theuniversity within 3 weeks and participants will be required to consume a highand low glycemic carbohydrate meal before performing a 40km timed cycle trial. We will measure time to complete trials, heart rate, power, blood lactate andglucose. Please be aware that blood samples will be taken before and afterexercise trials (this is a small finger prick).
