Us cycling type wouldn't really see the appeal. To the vast majority of users I'd imagine that it's not a bike to get fit and enjoy cycling on, but rather a cheap mode of transport without the hassles of insurance, VED, MOT, fuel, CBT/license etc.
Yes - for me the "appeal" is that it's cheaper to run than a car. I don't care if many other cyclists say "we're fitter than you, you're lazy, we've got a proper HPV, you're cheating" etc etc etc. The way I see it, we can each choose how we commute and how we anjoy riding a bike. A pedelec is just an easier way to commute and an alternative way to cycle for recreation for the not-so-fit. I do also greatly enjoy riding my e-bike, as it's much more comfortable on the road than my old hard tail MTB!
