I get asked to sign quite a few. I turned one down once as I didn't know the person in question only his mother.

The one that tickles me is solicitors signing stat decs. They charge about a fiver per signature and then put the money in their pocket. No income tax, not through their firm, just beer money.

Two of my neighbour's are teachers, and luckily we had just lived here long enough when we needed a passport signing, but I've also got other friends who are teachers too so that's pretty easy for us.

I get to sign quite a few of these and they do indeed check every so often.

What amused me was when I applied after a lapse for a renewal, I had both my previous MOD issued passports

My two blue passports apparently do not count as passports at all.... as there is no record kept of them

So even after using the Post Office (and paying for the privilege) who had accepted the blue passport as a passport, my renewal was rejected and I had to apply for a new passport

After some weeks I was informed that as I had erroneously replied for a renewal I had to be interviewed in Newport Wales, as there were no appointments more locally

So off we went.....

To be asked a series of bizarre questions I could not answer about my parents (both were very private and did not discuss their families)

So being unable to answer many of the questions beyond their birthplace, DoB etc they eventually decided that I could have one

Total waste of time and money

I feel your pain, I renewed my Irish passport while still in Spain and it was a major ballache, teachers, police, doctors won't sign a foreign nationals passport application, so I contacted the Irish embassey informing them that I knew of nobody who could sign it and if they had any ideas to help me, their response was check the list and get one to sign it, when I emailed back explaining that there was no-one on the list that I knew or they wouldn't sign it and if they had any ideas on what I could do, they replied telling me to check the list and get someone to sign it..
by this stage I was starting to get slightly irritated and was about to send off a very strongly worded email, a friend of mine remined me that he had a friend who was a dutch doctor, my friend rang him and he had no problem signing it, if it wasn't for him I would have been truely up the creek without a paddle...
Wondered how you were going to work around that part.
