I don't have a date for when that patch was fitted but at a guess I would say 1 to 3 years (6k to 18k miles) and underneath the mess of the disintegrated paper it seems to be in perfect condition.

One thing I find interesting, the photo shows the scratches in the tube where I have rubbed it with sandpaper, however those scratches have all but disappeared under where the paper/foil was (the paper foil would have been an oblong shape that can just be made out)[/QUOTE]

The reason those scratches cannot be seen is because the rubber solution glue has filled the scratches in. The scratches can still be seen where no glue has been spread.

You are all dinosaurs. Go tubeless or even self adhesive patches and all your troubles are over
