I have now found the cause of that and the solution...I have not tried a support but have recently noticed that my right kneecap started clicking as I walk downstairs.
My right leg is significantly longer than my left leg. I was walking down the stairs with the left foot hitting the treads just left of centre and the right leg just right of centre.
I eventually realised that my right knee was twisting to the right as I walked down the stairs because of the extra length of the right leg.
The solution is to plant my right foot at the right of each tread, which allows the knee to bend comfortably.
I have had a few twinges in the right knee when cycling so I think that I will experiment with the cleat setup on my right shoe.
