It seems that I have paid almost $500 for a hideous pair of Goth Biker Boots via paypal!
Has this happened to any of you & if so did it take long to sort out??
Paypal claims it could take 20 days to be resolved - I may starve to death in that time now that my bank balance is looking decidedly feeble!

I had about £1000 taken very soon after i set up my account. I think i had the money back in within a few days, it was very fast. They didn't resolve the case straight away, they just gave me my money back and then sorted out the problem. If they'd decided that i was in the wrong, they'd have taken the money off me again. I seem to remember being pretty satisfied with how they dealt with it, and how quickly.

I had it happen twice over Christmas - once was a payment to Argos, another for Superdry T-Shirts, about £300 in total. Paypal are actually quite good at sorting stuff like this out - they gave me my money back within days, but I would still suggest that you make a point of changing your details (password, remove credit cards etc.) with them regularly. I actually ended up with the reverse problem of having also reported the issue to my bank, who gave me a refund too - so I had to then sort out who got the money back!

I have my paypal set up to text me a 6 digit code I have to enter before progressing any action.
I figured that would be safe.

However, on the 'Send SMS' page there are options for 'not having my code available' and 'skipping the security this time'. Seems a bit pointless having the security of it can be 'skipped'!

Paypal used to have a terrible reputation on this matter but I'm so glad to read they have improved the process.

I received an email yesterday claiming to be from Paypal.

It also suggested that my account had been used to purchase something from New Zealand. It was requesting me to click on a link in the email to verify if I had indeed ordered the said item (which of course I had not).

Being a very cautious person, I did'nt follow the link. I logged on to my paypal account in the normal manner and checked for myself to see if any unauthorised purchase had been made. Of course my suspicions were right, and the email was clearly phisling.

Always be extra cautious and never click on any link in an email that you have your doubts about. I did of course forward the mail to paypals security guys.

Sorry to hear that, Pigo. I hope you get it resolved sooner than 20 days.

A quick update on this - Paypal were very good & refunded me in full within 5 days!
My account was put on hold until I had been through all the relevant safety measures but all is now running smoothly.
I've changed every password under the sun (& am having trouble remembering them now!)
I was kind of hoping for a follow up "we've caught the b#$*^"#s" sort of email but alas, I've heard nothing more......

If you ever get an Email from payal saying you need to update your details or that someone has used your account, send the email to spoof@paypal.com they usually reply in a couple of days saying that it wasnt them. log into your paypal account, it'll tell you if you need to update.

Sometimes when I get one of this fishing scam emails to reset my details or similar scams, for fun I follow the link and enter my password as goandfarkyourself ^_^ and it's funny to see that I never get a warning of wrong password.

But these scams should be taken seriously....... my daughter got £6000 taken out of her bank within 30 minutes of given her details away. Luckily the bank realised something was not right and contacted her.

I can't remember exactly what the scam was like but it was something quite clever and lots of people could easily fall for it.

If in any doubt - don't follow any links and enter a fake password to start with. If no warnings of incorrect password then for sure it's a scam.
