Once you've got off everything you need to get off, install Linux on it. You can install it in dual boot mode if you want. That way you can boot up either XP or Linux. You get get Linux installation disks by buying a Linux magazine from WH Smiths. Ubuntu is a popular one, although there are many others.

unfortunately it's no better with all the start up stuff turned off

but it does work in safemode with networking so at least i have something.
hmmm

What virus software have you got on, virus stuff can be a right bugger, uninstall it and see. I had a corrupt update which did similar once.

I would then backup all data and restore to factory settings/reinstall windows. Worth doing this every year or so anyway.
that's the way it's looking... quick question. I have my internal hard drive partitioned as C: and E:, with all program files on C: ...and pictures, videos and other random crap on the E: partition. Will I loose the E: partition by restoring the factory settings?

AVG free anti virus, and Comodo firewall... i did get an AVG pop-up of some new threats it had blocked a couple of days ago... which seemed odd as, as far as i can tell, it blocks stuff without making a song and dance about it, and this time it did make a song and dance "Oh look what i've blocked!".... good thinking batman.

It depends but most likely so I would back up everything. Often computers have a factory restore setting built in which can be run when windows loads so look that up based on the model of the computer as this negates the need to source the drivers needed.

Well, I don't think it's the best quite honestly. It's slowly coming off my PC's as it's inconsistent and doesn't seem to work, which is a bit of a bummer for virus software.

Download malware bytes and ccleaner, run them in safe mode and run a chkdsk and remove the avg

If you have the original XP disk, you could try a repair and you would not lose any current data.

A clean install would make your computer faster, but would wipe out everything you have on the computer.Since it still boots up for you,why not transfer important data onto an external disk and perform a clean install?

As XP is more or less at the end of its life and malware of one form or another is bound to become more of an issue, maybe you should use this as an opportunity to try one of the alternatives. I'm currently trying Linux Mint XFCE . Try it, you might like it.

the PC came with XP installed and no actual disc, that was 4 years ago so maybe it is time i did a clean install.

going down the linux route would mean no longer using some of the software i like. Yes there are always alternatives such as Gimp and Mixxx... but they're not good alternatives.
