All,

I have just brought my fist single speed bike and i am looking to use it for running about the place and leaving it in town (locked up). I want it to be usable but not look too good.

I brought a Globe Roll 1 flat bar and have at the moment kept it standard. It has come with black plastic flat pedals (no clips). I was thinking of putting some Shimano M324's, this would allow me to use it to nip to town in normal shoes and use clipless if i wanted to go longer. The other option would be Shimano M520's as this should make it less nick-able when in town.

When i rode the bike back from the shop i was worried about the pedals clipping the ground as it felt closer than my normal bikes but at the moment i am running it in freewheel mode, so not too much of a problem.

What are peoples thoughts on the different pedal options.

Thanks in advance
Gareth

I'd go for the combo pedals - you can run normal shoes if you want to and thieves don't discriminate on pedal type.

And ride it fixed ;)

If you are going to run fixed, which you ought, beware the SPD's may restrict the range of movement of your knee. To answer your question, I would choose the me Shimano M324's.

Those MKS pedals look good, though. Are the bearings smooth? What do they weigh (with a view to their quality rather than as a weight-weenie question)?

I mentioned knees simply because I did have a problem with running SPD's on my fixed. It went away when the pedals were switched to Speedplay's. I guess we have different knees.

M520's here, loads of float on them.

Thanks for all the advice, I have bolted a set of M324's on it at the moment as i had a set on the MTB (wont get used in the summer). I will see how i get on with it like this to start with as i can always mix and match between bikes.

I think i will try it in Fixie mode once i have got a couple more miles in on her. did a 15 mile spin the other day, going up crimp hill i was down to about 3mph and down Egham hill i was up at 35mph.

Thanks for all the advice, its interesting to see what others are using.

I have SPDs, not sure which ones but I think they're 520s.

I use the same pedals on all my bikes because I like the consistency.

Here for rides.
I don't like A520's/A530's on a fixed. I find a shoe with mtb cleats skid alarmingly off the non-clip side of those pedals. I'm going M324 or possibly white T400 on my current build.

I'm big on pedal reflectors on a commute bike btw.
