These could be worth considering. Came across them recently and the idea seems sound. Have not tried them.

Mks sylvian tour are good, cheap and easy to service
Yes, I've always heard good things about them. Can you do a full bearing service with just normal tools?

They are only flat on one side but for general cycling/touring these are pretty much my favourite pedals:

except in their infinite wisdom Shimano have designed the thing in such a way that you need to buy a tiddly tool costing more than the pedals themselves to service the bearings. I well remember thinking myself rather wise when, donkeys' years ago, I asked the bike shop if they were servicable. Oh yes, they said, not mentioning ....

Wellgo LU868. Grippy durable rubber grips, serviceable bearings (allen key, pedal spanner, 12mm thin socket and pliers). About £6. Why haven't other pedals died out yet?

Union SP-808 are basically the same construction but more plastic and I think more expensive in the UK.

Remarkable that something of that price seems to be essentially metal - and servicable.

You used them a lot/given them a proper road test?

Do you have a source? A quick google found a few online sources but out of stock.

The low price may be because even though they're serviceable, they're pretty simple: loose bearings, steel axle, aluminium frame and plastic caps. I've used them a lot - they're currently on my second-most-used bike (the most-used has the similar SP-808s). I don't have a current source and I've had to hunt around to find UK stock whenever I want to buy some and, at the moment, even http://www.dutchbikebits.com/pedals/wellgo-868-anti-slip-pedal says "2-3 days" rather than "in stock" (and delivery charges are painful).

It's a bit more complicated than that...
At six quid a pair why is serviceability important? They'll last for several years and then you replace them.

servicing stuff is good.

Following your reasoning the world would be even more full of junk.

i still service my socks and underpants - both cheap.
