If the shoes she has are designed for both cleat styles, then surely they are smooth on the bottom. Best to use those with cleats rather than by them selves.

They are smooth but when I've installed the cleat they wont be very good on the flat side of the pedal but of course they'll be fine on the spd side.

I'm not sure gender is an issue with pedals.
If (or when) she decides she'd like to try clipless, I'd avoid Look initially. They are lovely to ride with but are not always friendly when putting a foot down. The shoes can feel funny to walk in. They have more 'otherness' than most new users will want.
Mmm, shoes that feel funny to walk in? Seems quite normal for SOME women?
