I think the general consensus is shimano m520 pedals. I have them on my commute bike and they are great. You can slacken them right off so your feet will come out easily.
I like road pedals on my road bikes and use Look Keo pedals on both of them. I use Look Keo Max Carbon 2 on my winter bike and they are excellent. I prefer them to the Shimano 105 pedals I had previously.
Road pedals like Keos with road shoes are half the weight of SPDs but sometimes difficult to clip and unclip and the cleats make walking difficult. Road shoes and pedals also give you a flat firm platform for standing on the pedals such as when climbing hills.
SPDs are ideal for touring or commuting or the less confident because clipping/unclipping is two-sided and easier and the cleats are recessed in the soles of the shoes making walking easy.
Whatever you choose you will feel more in control and in better contact with the bike but you will fall off three times before your brain learns to unclip without thinking.
do clip in pedals make a difference i have been thinking about them for the hybrid as my feet keep coming of the pedals but concerned also about falling of the bike at stops etc.
