Er, and...?

(You forgot to ask a question!)

It is usual for decent bikes to come without pedals, and that is a good thing. There are multiple types of pedal so why supply one type when a customer might want a different type?

Seems mad doesn’t it? Sell a bike, but don’t equip it with pedals.

The reason is that such bikes are often ridden with clipless pedals and there are several types. By not adding pedals, they allow you to choose your preferred shoe and pedal combination,

The same point could actually be made about saddles, which are equally individual items. I find some saddles really uncomfortable even though other riders love them - the Charge Spoon, for example. I only lasted one hour on mine and found it so painful that I replaced it after that!

Same here. A tea spoon would be more comfortable to sit on.

Yes this is normal for decent bikes, cheap bike shaped objects tend to come with something looking like a pedal. The better bikes that come without pedals are potentially going to be ridden with clip in pedals or maybe flat pedals, so the manufacturers leave it up to the buyer to choose. As already said there was a reason for not supplying pedals , but that reason alludes me. Others may remember.

I bought a Revolt 2 about a year ago...no pedals..and as it was an end of year deal they wouldn't even throw in a starter set.

I love it now but am disappointed in paint quality...check it thoroughly especially around fork ends, bolt threads etc.

Mine is Matt goldfish colour...looks great but I would choose gloss next time...I love a good shine😂

Enjoy buying

Definitely an argument for buying from a local independent as they'll probably have an old set in the parts bin to at least get you started.

This is a good reason for "being known" at the LBS
There have been several times when they have found something wrong and just replaced it with "Oh we had that lying around"

I presume they were old ones that someone with a better bike was upgrading so they just chucked the old - but hardly used - bits in the back

I was mates with the lads who run mine anyway before they bought the shop 👍

Supplied without pedals it is not classed as a bicycle (Because it can't be ridden) but a collection of components. This gets round the requirement that all new cycles sold in the UK must have the front brake on the right and must be fitted with reflectors.

I like my Charge Spoon saddles. But the same could be said for Brooks. I had 2 Brooks Imperial Saddles. One was great, the other was terrible. This is why I have a row of saddles in the workshop and often change a saddle during the year.
