My way of thinking is that the care you excercise as a cyclist or driver should, as much as is possible, negate the danger that your vehicle adds to the road.
dondare, yes there is an onus on the road user to look out for the more vulnerable road users. However there is also a responsibility on every road user to them selves & others to act in a reasonable manner on the roads. The responsibility for the vulnerable road users safety certainly shouldn't lay entirely on the shoulders of those who are using a higher risk form of transport.
But we are very far from that situation, aren't we. Adults still run over children with their cars, claim that the child ran out in front and there was nothing they could do, and get away with it. You'd never be able to pass the blame onto a child in that way while in charge of any other dangerous piece of machinery.
