Thanks. Dundonians sounds right.

What sparked the question was a news item about Dundee United. My Mrs said: I wonder if they wear an Orange kit because of the marmalade.

Which is a bit of an off the wall statement.

She said marmalade was made in huge quantities there in Dundee's heyday. Maybe it still is.

They play in a tangerine strip, not orange, and are sometimes referred to as The Tangerines. Dundee was famous for the three Js, jute, jam and journalism, as anyone who received a Scottish education in the 20th century will tell you!

Definitely! Supposedly invented by one James Keillor of Dundee (as in ... Keillor's Marmalade ). The story goes a Spanish ship went down in the Firth of Tay, and these boxes of thick-skinned and bitter fruit were washed ashore. Completely inedible, so his thrifty wife boiled it and added sugar - and they made their fortune.

And you can still get/make Dundee marmalade - gorgeous stuff!

But as far as I know, there's only one company still making "proper marmalade" in the area ... and they're up the road in Arbroath.

Aye - and it's Dundonians.
