Out of interest why did you bother removing the fixed (DS) cup?

When I'm just servicing/ regreasing I leave the fixed one in place, remove only the adjustable one, and clean inside the BB shell with a rag, because removing the fixed cup can be such a PITA.

Is it just because you're more thorough than me?

If I'm replacing the ball bearing setup with a sealed unit then I remove both cups, obvs.

Mainly because the amount of dried up grease I have found on everything connected to bearings.

And I always try to re use as much as I can of the original parts.

Definitely a pia to remove though

@biggs682 - I had the same issue with the 1948 Claud Butlee. The seller suggested some parts hadn't been ever greased since new.

I think this one had only been very lightly used before being put away and forgotten about.

Certainly should ride a bit easier than it would have done if I had tried it before handing over my hard earned cash .

Fitted cables this morning and managed a quick 0.75 mile test ride .

Guards need cleaning before re fitting and a few little adjustments required once I have done another 5 miles of testing.

An interesting looking Elephant bike has popped up on my radar , these have puzzled me for a while and I might be able to sneak a viewing before it gets listed for sale

I have a colleague who uses one for commuting, a bit of a beast, but absolutely bombproof with hub gears and drum brakes.

That's good to hear, can't imagine you would rush off to use it if you fancied a quick ride.

Ooh, theyve often intrigued me. Let me know if you pick one up and I'll pop over for a nosey if that's ok. I've often considered one as amoure utility tool just for local hops.

Ok will do it will be the weekend before I get to view it looking at the week ahead.

Ticked another niggle off tonight with the Sierra I keep noticing a lot of what I thought was brake dust over the front of the bike it turned out to be the mudguard rubbing gently on the tyre so a swift adjustment has hopefully sorted it.

Next up for the first couple of miles I get a noise from the front wheel which I think is bearings so I need to clean them out and have a look.

Will an elephant bike fit in the note ?

Just back from collecting this pr of Dawes , the man's one has all the hallmarks of an early Galaxy whilst the ladies one is a Windsor as is normal came with a few extras.

First job is to remove the guards from the Galaxy as they have been hand painted and they are cracked so will replace them with the ones of the Windsor.

A couple of 20 minute garage sessions have seen the old cracked mudguards replaced and allowed me to have a look at a few things on the bike .

Spotted at least one broken spoke on the rear wheel to be replaced, koolstop grey pads are fitted all the way around and for some reason the lower section of forks have been painted black and hubs silver.

But it's looking better already. Over the years I have been asked why I don't trim excess mud guards stays down well the answer is it allows me to swap them from bike to bike easier as whoever fitted the guards originally to the Windsor has trimmed them and now they only just fit the galaxy.
