My wife often responds to what she thinks is my reason for asking something. As in....

Me: are you going into town?
Her: what do you want?

I might not want anything other than to know whether she's going or not!

It's a woman thing, I am aware I often answer TVC's question with another

People who decide to ring a call centre whilst one of their children is screaming louder than very loud thing screaming into a very large PA system....

.
This reminds me of another pet hate - children who are perfectly quiet for hours, including the ten minutes I've spent on hold, but the minute I get through to the call centre start shouting louder than a loud thing screaming into a large PA system.

Arbitary measurement scales in news articles - "the length of 3 double decker buses". As if I couldn't imagine the length of something described in feet or metres without buses or football pitches as a reference point. :headshake:

No, I challenge that one. Some people do find it easier to imagine things than distances in metres etc. I'm pretty bad at estimating distances in terms of figures, but can relate to the size or weight of some* objects well enough.

If everyone could estimate distances perfectly, the habit of using comparisons would never have arisen, so it must be necessary.

*I'd find a double decker bus more useful as a comparison than a football pitch, because I've seen hundreds of buses, but never been to a football pitch.

"Can I GET a coffee" No! No! No!
Only slightly related, but a certain tax-wary coffee seller is the most guilty.....

When asking what you would like, the assistant says something like "What can I get you TODAY?". What's that? I have the option to pay for a coffee today, but take delivery say, next week? Or are you reassuring me that you will fulfil my order before midnight? Just.......why?

It's spreading as well. Listen out for it.

Probably a little controversial but I hate it when drivers flash/wave cars out of junctions. Stick to the rules of the road, if there's a problem with heavy traffic at that particular junction leave it to the powers that be to sort it out.
Disagree...partly.
I do it for two reasons, treat others as i'd like to be treated, whats another car when theres already 50 in front of me, and I get good karma...thats three good reasons.....I could go on.

But then...school run mums sitting in queues at the school exit, waiting to get out onto the road...sorry , make your kids walk or bike to school.

The phrase "thinking outside the box" and general office waffle speak...like "touching base" whats that all about?
A new one for me the other week was...
'Creating a bow wave of results'

I understand the meaning, but what a tortuous delivery.

Maybe a look at the British economy of late would explain how contradictory ''thinking outside the box'' is. It suggests creative thought but supplies a ready-made cliché instead, and every time it's uttered it stamps ''failure of creative thought'' all over it. And so it goes.

Being a grumpy old git i share most of the comments in this thread but there are three things that are really annoying me in this warm weather.

Men who walk around town centres in shorts and no shirt drinking beer from a can

Lads who wear hoods when the weather is in the high twenties

And finally, people who ride bikes in flip flops, please wear some shoes before you get hurt.

On the approach to roadworks etc when the lanes narrow down, drivers who are too impatient to wait like everyone else and try to bully their way into the front of the queue.
They don't get to pull in in front of me:ninja:

Conversely, those that merge too early in heavy traffic and turn a one-mile tailback into a two-mile one, instead of using the capacity of the road and zip-merging at the end...
