Well my old mobile phone died the other day. It was a basic Nokia one. So if I aim for a basic phone will I be able to use my old SIM card? I'm assuming the SIM has all my address book stuff, phone number and credit on it? Or am I misunderstanding that?

Thanks for your thoughts.

You should be OK if you stay with the same network as your old one, otherwise it might be 'locked' to the new network and won't accept your old sim.Yes your credit will still be there but your contacts might not depending on if you saved them to 'sim' or 'phone'
HTH.

Ah thanks Potsy. I didn't have an option on the old phone to choose where to save. It was just saved somewhere. I guess I could google and find out how the old Nokia remembered stuff.

I'm thinking I could buy a phone which doesn't have a SIM (or network lock?) and just plug in the old SIM..............

Sorry but I think that should read "I didn't find an option on the old phone to choose where to save". Every Nokia, at least since the 2110 I had in 1995, gives you the option.

Yes any unlocked phone will be fine, though they tend to be a bit dearer. As norm says the option would have been there somewhere.
It is a real problem if you only have your numbers saved to the phone and it breaks,in the olden days(norms time) you would have them all written down somewhere, but nowadays who can be bothered?

Most phones save to internal memory, not SIM, so very important to backup. You can get SIM readers very cheap for PC's so you can get numbers off if need be.

IIRC, the SIM card will only save basic info (name and number). If you want to save more complete contact details, such as addresses, emails, pix etc, you need to use the phone's memory.

Ah thanks all. I'm a bit of hopeless case with mobile phones. I can ring folks and text em (slowly) and that's about it - apart from putting name and number into some bit of memory wherever the default is.

It happened that I fiddled about with the phone and took it apart as far as I could go until I hit some weird looking bolt heads for which I'd need a special tool. After a day or a few I decided to reassemble so as not to loose the parts. Now it works again like before !!!!

It's either some damp got in or there was a software glitch which disappeared on rebooting. As long as it's not gonna be one of those recurring problems I'm sorted. Well I will be when I've written all those names and numbers down..............

Oh - and I did find where the SIM card is too

And I found the model number - but I've forgotten it already
