I have taken a bit of time off to do my brother's bike frame so I haven't been able to do much. What I have been doing though is rubbing the paint down and sorting out the corrosion areas. It looks like I am going to remove the clear plastic Pinarello chain stay protector, which will be a shame. It has started to become unglued around the edge. I will clean it up and try to find some clear glue to reattach it once the frame is sprayed.

I managed to get some primer on the majority of the frame this afternoon. There are a few other patches which need doing but they will need some complicated masking out first.
Here is my brother's frame which I resprayed recently.

The frame is looking like a patchwork quilt! I have been finding loads of chips which I had touched up when it had the measles. I think I had forgotten just how many chips it had originally. Added to that I have found corrosion spiders lurking in the paintwork. This lead to me running out of materials so I went out to Halfords to get some more primer, black and some masking tape. This also lead me to just wonder just how much I had spent on it so far and how it would compare with having to sprayed professionally.

Trying to add up all the costs so far are going to be a bit of a guess. I haven't added in the cost of my masking paper which I have had for years or petrol costs for running around. I accidentally bought 2 sealed Campagnolo BB, I made the mistake of buying a British threaded one instead of Italian. So around £70. I can use the British one later on another bike so that price can be halved. I gave the cycle shop £10 for helping me to remove the Seized BB. I think I will give them another £10. As I couldn't have done it on my own. The red paint I bought was only sold as a litre, likewise so was the activator, this is far too much for one project and will be used on various projects. I think the paint worked out at £60 including vat, not sure what the activator was. I have also bought cans of primer and black paint so approximately £40. I will nick some of my brother's clear lacquer. Masking tape must be around £10 now with all the masking so far. So roughly £200 +.

A bit of a shock but I did buy the bike cheaply and some of the costs can be made back from doing other projects. So with the costs so far I thought I would look up how much it would have cost having it done professionally.
Just having the carbon forks lacquered would cost £100. The cost to have a frame sprayed in flamboyant paint is £330. A straight colour would be less. I quoted that price as I was looking up how much my brother's frame would cost. I think having the banding done in a different colour on the seat tube is £65 and the same for the head tube. Applying transfers is another cost.

So far the costs of having it done seem to be getting above £600 and that is excluding the costs of the Pinarello transfers or the silver flashes. Having to redo all of the frame , taking careful measurements as to where each transfer or flash went is and would be a nightmare so I would the cost would be way above what I have calculated so far. I can see why the seller sold the bike.

Once I have flatted the primer back I will have to plan how to go about spraying the frame. I think the next stage will be to spray the black and then the silver, these can be sprayed with cellulose or whatever the silver base coat is, these can then be given a coat of aerosol clear lacquer to protect them. It is what I did on my brother's frame when I did the banding. The red is 2 pack which is longer drying and can pickle if sprayed over with cellulose before it has had time to fully harden.

I need to check that I have traced all of the Pinarello names on the frame. Just to be awkward they are in different sizes. I thought I had bought some from the bay but when I checked them they were in different sizes to mine and also in a different font.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
No I didn't see it . What channel was it on?

Only streaming but you'll be able to find hilights on YouTube probably. You'll see some great shots of the Angliru.

Do I have a plan? We'll sort of. It is flexible. I hadn't planned on doing this much on the bike in the first place but as I started cleaning it up and going over it I found more corrosion areas. The crossbar will have to be done again as the colour is a bit orange, I will see if I can find a way to mask the Angliru out.
This morning I flatted the primer areas down. Imay have to go over with them again with white as reds can be difficult in covering/ hiding power, a bit transparent.
