Eg Cornhill and the roads around it, during rush hour when the pavement and the road are both crowded.

Cornhill

I can't see why you couldn't hold secondary or even primary on that road TBH.

In that case it is your responsibility to ensure you ride in a manner which will allow you to stop should a ped step into your path.

Is that the case? Genuine question. Are pedestrians not liable if they go onto the road without looking and I hit them? Whether on a bike or car. Obviously I accept the responsibility for riding with due care and attention in the given circumstances.

As far as I am aware yes it is the case. Once a pedestrian has one foot on the road they have priority.

Not exactly, pedestrians will be to blame if they just walk into the road without looking and they cause a collision.
Whilst we don't have jaywalking laws. You can't just slowly walk across a duel carriage way and expect all vehicles to stop for you.

As cyclists in a busy city we should be aware of the potential dangers that pedestrians can cause and ride in a manor which avoids confrontation. If you are filtering in a position which is close to the curb then you Gould be cycling slowly and covering the brakes. You can often see what pedestrians are going to do by watching their body language and the path they have walked.

Yes sorry I was a little pedantic there. I agree with what you say about body language; it is a great indicator. It's Manner not Manor BTW

Southbound, south side of Tower Bridge can be pretty bad for peds crossing without looking. The bridge is busy and narrow, and is almost immediatley followed by a pinch point for a crossing. I'm careful to take it slow over there, but that wasn't enough to swerve or stop to avoid a guy who walked into the road without looking 3' in front of me. Mind you, his arse made for an helpful cycle rack.

As was discussed in another thread rightly or wrongly pedestrians have the ultimate priority unless otherwise stated.

Cripes, don't bring that up again, or we'll be in for another 20 pages of how it's OK to mow down pedestrians as it's usually their own fault.

Had quite an extraordinary ride through Derby city centre this lunchtime.

Had to slow to about 5mph as NOT ONE person crossing the road stopped or looked either direction at any point as I passed along the main shopping road. NOT. ONE.

Wish I had a camera, it was surreal. I'd say at least 10-15 people at various points over a half mile stretch just stepping out into the road, not at a crossing, not looking either way nor slowing down before approaching the road.

I guess because it's bus taxi and bike only, they are used to seeing great big buses or bright yellow taxis out of the corner of their eyes so don't bother looking.

The weirdest bit was seeing a group of people either side of a pedestrian crossing, the traffic lights were red but they were still stationary so thought it must mean the man had turned red and the traffic lights were about to turn green. Sure enough, a couple of seconds the traffic lights turned green ... and everyone started crossing the road, causing me to have to stop rather abruptly.

Bizarre.

Or rather, Derby.

Yes - just opposite Queen Elizabeth Street. That junction is mad.

Sadly there looked to be a terrible collision between a motorcyclist and a pedestrian this morning, along London Wall. I'm assuming (with very limited knowledge) that a pedestrian tried to run across the road but didn't have sufficient time, and the motorcyclist didn't have a chance to stop. That particular area is notorious for lemming style pedestrians, in my experience.

Why are we all in such a rush to get to our destination 10 seconds faster? To be honest, I too am guilty of always rushing around, but I'm not sure what I'm really rushing for. I even rush to get to work and I hate where I work at the moment  !!!!! It seems to be an ingrained habit now to knock time off every activity.

Hopefully all those involved in this morning's crash are ok!
