My wife grumbles now & then at my refusal to replace our 32" Sony Trinitron with a 'less embarrassing' tv, but it still performs beautifully and has never missed a beat in 15 years, so I can live with the 'embarrassment' (which, needless to say, doesn't aflict me in the slightest). Out of curiosity, I looked 'em up on ebay...there was one went in Cheltenham last week, with stand, for the princely sum of - wait for it, wait for it......£1.20.

Sweepea - hang onto it. The picture quality far outstrips any modern LED/LCD/Plasma eqivalent. Don't replace. If SWMBO insists on a new model, can I have it. Does £1.50 sound good?

Fellow Cyclechatters, don your black armbands and join the Browser household in a brief period of mourning.
After 15 and-a-half faithful years our Zanussi Jetsystem 1000 washing machine is finally beyond economical repair and is destined for that great utility room in the sky  :rain:
It does mean that tomorrow we will be taking ownership of a nice new Bosch WAQ283S0GB with more wash programs than one can shake a stick at and (hopefully) lower 'leccy & water bills, but I can't help but wonder if I'll be 15+ years older (48 ) when this one finally dies.

Well my Zanussi Jetsystem 1200 washer stopped washing properly about 6 months ago. A little premature I felt given it is only 14 years old and still looks like new. It still rinses and spins fine but not washing. Something to do with the programmer being broken and "uneconomic" to repair. It was made when Zanussi was Zanussi, the appliance of science era and has never missed a beat or a spin to be precise. Now they are owned by AEG and are frankly pants. I looked at Bosch, over priced and several things I didn't like about their machines. So now I have a top of the range Beko machine where the Zanussi used to sit. The Beko does everything very well. Is A++ energy rated and uses less water than a desert rat. It's not quite as refined in operation as the Zanussi was but it gets my kit clean and dry. And it hasn't caught fire, yet. The old Zanussi might go in the garage for old times sake as it still spins and rinses as I can't face calling the scrap metal man seeing them drag it away to their hearse truck piled high with other unwanted or dead white goods.

We bought a Zanussi tumble dryer in 1981 which gave wonderful service for nearly 20 years. I replaced belts and elements a few times and even repaired a pulley wheel with Araldite after it wore out due to a seized bearing. Eventually the electo mechanical timer switch went and I couldn't get a spare. We are onto our 3rd one since of various makes and I reckon I'm lucky if they last 5 years. Should this be merged with nostalgia thread?

I reckon for any white goods like this - ie, washing machines and driers, not fridges or toasters...things that have to move big weights round and round for extended periods - it really is worth going for Miele. They say they build things to last 20 years, and in my experience it's true. I wouldn't buy anything else made by Miele - I don't think it's worth the premium for a fridge, say - but for a washing machine, I'd go Miele every time.
