My current private sector pension is better than my NHS pension. There is a lot of mythology and misunderstanding about public sector pensions...

I was hoping you might tell the rest of us where to put our pension pots.

So how are Patel's Newsagents going to afford provide a decent private pension for their employees? Not every private company is a multi national.
Patel's employees can however avail themselves of financial services and savings based on what they can afford or are willing to sacrifice. I currently pay several thousand pounds per year into my pension. It's matched under my service conditions as a reward for my work and restrictions, an emotional contract I made three decades ago and planned my entire financial future and that of my family around it. For people in the private sector to criticise me for that, while not willing to make the same financial or emotional sacrifices shows what a good job Windsor did.

Like you I paid a fair chunk in, it did not turn out too well though.

We all make our choices though, mine was a bad one. I can also assure you most of us make sacrifices.

I would not criticize you for having a good pension, I might those who did the maths many years ago though. I also certainly would not want to see what was promised to you taken away either.

I'm not criticising your pension, good luck to you when you get it. But Patel's employees who are on £6.70ph cannot afford to pay a bean into a private pension, they rely on every penny they earn plus Tax Credit top ups just to keep their head above water. I am self employed earning a reasonable but not fantastic wage and I cashed in my pension when I was 55 because the amount I would have had to pay each month to get a worthwhile return was eye watering. As it is, the twenty years of not insignificant contributions I paid bought an annuity which covers water rates and council tax with not enough left over for a service on my car.

It's a tough old world out in the private sector unless you earn a decent wage. Like I said, good luck to you but millions of us cannot hope to afford a decent pension.

Is one I have heard being used by specials and full time police.

Not sure I like it , not sure I don't.

Like all things there are good ones bad ones and indifferent ones. North Wales plod used to stipulate doing 2 years as a PCSO before you could apply for police force. Weeded out the Walts fairly effectively .
