I usually use a clamp, but you're quite right, a bolt would be better.

I use a quick release spindle with washers and 3ft long stilson grip steady pressure wins

Square taper solid spindle bottom bracket.
The OP has succeeded but, while here, when I had had to replace a BB and had a fubarred plastic LH cup - just the once, BB was OEM - I attacked the RH side, which is notoriously stiff and got it off. The RH cup came out easily then, of course.
