Possibly dumb question

I regularly drool over some of the frames in this section, but on the whole, I'm not a drops guy. However, one of the reasons for that has been modern brake/shifter combos, which I don't like at all.
So...nice steel frame, 531 maybe. But me being weedy me, I'd be wanting the hybrid style gearing setup I have on my Scott. Presumably it's possible to use a modern freehub wheel, cassette, and a long cage mech, combined with downtube friction shifters? Ok, no indexing, but no issue with that
And assuming a modern mech will fit, of course!

I definitely feel the seeds of a project sprouting!

Its all possible, plus you can have indexed down tube shifters.

That's a bonus! Although not really worried about it. Triple chainrings would be more important, but for keeping it slightly authentic, double and friction shifters would suffice.

When you are writing a post there is an 'upload a file' box, click that and in the drop down box click 'pictures' then select the image file and 'double click' you can then choose thumbnail or full image.

I'm running a deore rear mech/claris front mech with sunrace downtube shifters with no issues except for getting used to them.
Lots of fumbling and weaving around as I'm trying to find the things and move them

Dont rush to buy a set of those bars l have an alloy ITM set incl. stem, (l think) which you can have for the price of the postage. I will try to get a photo of them later.

Given a set of bars like that, I'd go with MTB-style brak/shifter combos, as I've done on the Scott.
