Possibly the worst piece of cycling "journalism" ever?

Hmmm...

But Copenhagen and Amsterdam, compared to British cities, are mere villages.
They were put together on altogether different lines, 60 odd years ago, after getting blitzed to smithereens.

The staggering amount of research that went into this is hilarious.

There's another thread already on this but I will say here that that sort of story isn't journalism as in investigative journalism. It's rant, gossip, tittle-tattle stuff. It's an extension of the 'op ed' kind of columns that respected journalists wrote once they'd cut their teeth. Perhaps papers realised the popularity of opinion (as opposed to fact) and went with it.

I'm cynical. I think it's deliberately intended to provoke response. There is no intention to deal in fact or to educate. It's purely about getting people to respond, I guess because it sells papers and/or generates advertising revenues.

I would say 'dismiss it' but I have genuine concerns that it does actually condone attitudes. I am afraid that a moron, one brain cell motorist will read such crap and see it as justification to run someone down. So I have no idea how to deal with it in truth.

I think we (well, not me but others  ) can only respond calmly to such articles, pointing out the factual inconsistencies and asking if the writer really intends to encourage aggressive behaviour. Even at the risk of falling into the trap of 'response'.

You have to have some sympathy for him though. All those years in journalism, all those high aspirations when he started and then he realises all he has achieved in his whole long career is to have risen to doing Victor Meldrew impersonations in the back of a local rag. You too would feel bitter and twisted in the circumstances.

 Personal integrity sold down the river for advertising revenues.

Perhaps journalists no longer aspire to rooting out corruption and would prefer Clarkson's pay cheque instead!

He needs pulling up on that 'cycling more dangerous than fighting in Iraq' crack. Any journalist worth his salt should be able to interpret statistics properly.
