And there was me, all innocent like, thinking that paying the postage actually covered the postage. Pretty dumb, when you think about it.
Paying the postage does indeed cover the postage. It doesn't, however, cover the import duty and VAT levied on the goods. The Post Office act as collecting agents for Customs and Excise and the addition fees cover the cost to the Post Office of determining the amount of import duty and VAT and then collecting it and passing it on to the appropriate body. There is a price, below which, import duty is not levied but it's low - something like £29 or $29.
