Last time I did this I did what @ianrauk says. I went to Halfords, as it turned out I didn't have to ask as there was a bike box leaning against the skip outside. I packed the bike in the box and engaged a courier - I forget which one. Easy to get prices from them as their websites will give you plenty of info based on dimensions and weight of item.

I have seen a bike which had the rear derailleur broken off (by airport baggage handlers) so I would remove the mech from the frame, cover it in bubble wrap, and tape it safely out of the way inside the frame.

I would also put spacers between the fork ends, and between the rear dropouts.

Good idea. this happened to me when buying a few years ago. derailler and hanger were bent in about 2 inches, I bent it back and it worked ok for a few years but was never perfect

I wouldn't do it personally too much bother and risk of being scammed or the person saying it was damaged so they want a refund etc. I'd just wait and get someone who will collect.
