Is a pound really enough of a deterrent to stop people walking off with a trolley?
When the pound coin was introduced in 1983 it would have bought a pint of lager - about £3 to £4 today.
Isn't that still a hanging offence?
Possibly. There would be a lot of kids being hung after going to places like Sherwood visitors centre. They still have the 2 penny press.

This scutter is still alive so I don't think they will worry about a quid

Think most of them take 1 euro coin as well. Though that may end up being worth more than £1 yet.
A tip apparently is to keep a Euro just for that, as you can't spend it easily it won't get used for parking/whatever so you'll always have a trolley release fee available

You can spend a €1. Most coin operated machines accept them as a £1 coin.
