Shortages occur almost always because people panic buy. I think during COVID it was baking powder or yeast which went scarce as lots panic bought bread making ingredients. Also loo roll I think.

Madness but it's what happens.

As for myself and my family, there's a natural build up of food supplies anyway so if things went south we wouldnt starve, it would just mean we'd be eating some odd meals.

I guarantee if a hoax news report went out about say a bread shortage there'd be queues around the block as everyone panicked. Then in 2 weeks they'd be throwing mouldy bread away.

The only thing I do in preparation is keep some torches and a small gas stove in case of power cuts as living out in the sticks a bit we do get them in bad weather in the winter.
Yes you’d think the population is controlled by Hoax news. 🙈

The problem is pretty much the entire system financial, social and domestic relies on tech. If it was hacked/broke/got turned off most countries would be absolutely s*rewed for a good while across the board.

The experiment will be in the next few months. Possible 3 days to start with.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Friend of mine has a pretty posh hybrid car that has been giving him all kinds of trouble. At the weekend it decided that it wasn't going to play any more. In the middle lane of the Catford gyratory. Seems that it's perfectly capable of going along but the software had decided it just didn't want to any more. He managed to convince it to remove the handbrake (safety feature - car not moving, handbrake on) and pushed it to the side, but when the recovery vehicle got it home, it wouldn't even do that so they couldn't unload it. Fortunately the recovery crew were wise to this, and removed the wheels and replaced them with free-spinning temporary wheels to do the job.

Technology, eh?

Edit: Skoda if anyone's interested.

I'm pretty sure that are managed online by the manufacturer not the stores., The UK don't seem to have this set up that they have in Europe.

It's a bit more complex than that, most big supermarkets don't own the fridges or freezers they lease them. The online management is just seen as a sort of freebie/byproduct provided by the lease company. So not a much has been done with it or time spent on it. The problem is the hacking of freezers more than fridges. Freezers out of open hours go though a controlled defrost. Which is all managed remotely it's this that's been hacked making them run at often 50 degrees.
It's true the Uk is a bit different in that most are much newer then parts of Europe. The problem looks to be down to older equipment running older software. The other big problem is generally food retail has a lot less specialist cyber security experts than other big sectors like banks.
