problem with landline phone and internet

Ahem you're assuming everyone has that sort of socket. They don't.
I'd suggest that as well as getting at the snr and attenuation data in the router they take the router and plug it straight into the filter without the 7m cable or if the 7m cable is actually between the socket and the filter then take the phone, modem and filter down to the socket and plug in there and see if that makes a difference.

nope, not assuming. depends on the age of the wiring and how the extensions were put in. a lot of people have something very similar. My last place did not though, my inlaws did not, and my current place did not either until it was changed recently due to a line fault. just experience as an it engineer very used to fault finding on broadband and it sounds like he may well have a line fault and if he has, then this is a very useful check.

I was just browsing this idly while waiting for the rain to stop. I used to have about an 8-10 metre cable from the filter on the incoming socket to our router. The Internet access was awful.

I now plug the router directly into the filter on the socket and let wireless do the rest. Speed is great and never drops out.

Can't comment technically but that's what happened for us. Is ADSL broadband? I thought it was something else which came before broadband?

That's ISDN , one of the lights on your non cable router indicates if the dsl connection is present.
I concur with your suggestion that 7m of cable might be causing a problem.
Mind you the OP izsn't in a hurry or they've blown up their router.

This is just to get sales, comet and curry's work on the same principle when they try selling you expensive cables for you new t.v. ect.... yea things are better, but most people cant tell, things may be more noticeable with H.D. however, what you have to remember with the t.v. is you are watching a moving image that for most of the time is moving so you eye will miss imperfections.

I had a fault on my system, phoned TalkTalk and they booked a BT Openreach engineer to come and check my line. They warned me that if the problem turned out to be in my extension wiring then I would be charged for the visit - about £100 IIRC! I knew that I was okay though because the fault was still there with the extension cable unplugged.

When the engineer arrived, he saw that I had a very old telephone socket which did not have a test socket inside. He told me that Openreach are trying to replace all of those with the new type and that there is no charge for doing this. It turned out that the fault was in the old socket, so putting the new one in fixed it.

If any of you do not have the modern type of socket with the test point behind the front plate, then I suggest that you request that it be updated, having double-checked that there is no charge for doing so!

I'd like to back this up. We have BT Vision, a service we really enjoy, but it became increasingly problematic; freezing image, poor sync of image and sound etc. After ensuring everything in the house was correct and new I called BT and said I wanted a new socket fitting. Ours, which was literally dangling off the wall with the internal coloured wire exposed, was marked GPO!!! It was at least 30 years old and originally was, I think, hard-wired into the phone.

I was told there would be a charge of around £150 if it proved to be internal. I pointed out BT are happy to sell me broadband and BT vision and therefore have a responsibility to ensure I can use it.

A really helpful engineer turned up, took one look and replaced all sockets without a murmur. Speeds and reception improved instantly!!
