Some of you may remember that a while ago I had problems with the front mech throwing the chain after I got my trouser leg caught in it. After continuously trying to fine tune it using the limit screws with no luck (it always works under test conditions indoors, but not out on the road) I disconnected the cable and checked that the cage was still parallel with the chain. Upon doing this I noticed two things; firstly the cage itself was not quite parallel (it was bowed slightly outwards) and secondly there was some side-to-side play in the mech. Does this suggest that the front mech is knackered and needs replacing?

difficult to diagnose without seeing it. the 2 sides of cage are not paraller i.e. one or both are bent or not parallel with the chain, either bent or mech as rotated slightly on the down tube.
without being able to quantify how much play there is, it is difficult to say if the mech is worn.
I assume you have set the adjustment screws correctly - that is usually sufficient to limt the chain movement laterally.

Should be no play. You can just loosen the frame bolt and reposition it.
When I put a flat object next to the cage it doesn't lie flush against the cage i.e. there is a slight bend in the outer part of the cage.
I cannot set the limit screws to get correct shifting, the adjustment will go from not shifting up to throwing the chain, with no sweet spot in between.
I think I'll let the LBS have a look at it to see if they think it needs replacing.
