i laughed my head off when i first heard this title, after all if you cant fix a bike you must be a real cause for concern, when i was ten if a pal told me his dad was a bike mechanic i would have cholked on my piece in jam

This is a very well known equation. Some people might say that anyone who doesn't at least recognise it must struggle to count beyond their fingers and toes.

Everyone one has different interests and abilities.

P.S. When I was 10, I might have poked fun at the slow kid in class who couldn't spell choked.

I think paddy might be on to something, other than proving a stereotype that is.
Imagine you are a rider in the TdF and somewhere half way down a col you crash and bend a wheel, you take out your cell phone and call Planet X to send a replacement and camp out at the side of the road waiting. At first you think you are out of the race but the girl on the Planet X phone says they will send your wheel out with the batch of yellow jerseys, you ask if they can deliver your wheel first and when it comes you race the UPS truck down the road passing riders who went with Wiggle instead and win.

Just a point - many years ago when I were a lad [and dinosaurs roamed the earth] we had bicycle shops. Not as fancy as the shops of today but still shops where you could take your bike to be fixed. For this you had to pay - therefore the shopman was .... a professional bicycle mechanic. I seem to remember the Wright brothers owned a bicycle shop so they must have been professional bicycle mechanics too. Not much changes.

So you've never paid someone to make you coffee, pull you a pint or carry a plate from a kitchen to a table. There are plenty of jobs we could do for ourselves, but I'm all for someone trying to make a career out of it.
